La Tomatina is a tomato battle festival held in August every year, in the city of Bunol near Valencia, eastern Spain. Around 20,000 lucky people all around the world take part in the world’s biggest food fight.
At the start of the festival around six trucks filled with 160 tons of tomatoes, are placed in the town center, Plaza del Pueblo, while the crowd is chanting “Tomato! Tomato!”. The signal for the start of the fighting chaos is firing of water cannons. During the one hour battle people are throwing tomatoes at each other. To avoid injuries tomatoes must be squashed before firing them.
After the fight the streets are drenched in a sea of a tomato pulp. The authorities clean the streets with fire trucks, while visitors use the public showers or find water in the Bunol River to clean themselves.
La Tomatina has been a tradition in Bunol since the end of the World War Two. The most popular legend is that some irritated people from the town attacked the city councilmen during a celebration. The festival was banned from Francisco Franco for the Spanish State War, but reappeared in the 1970s.
For everyone who wants to participate, the next La Tomatina is planned for 28 August, 2018.
